We are also looking for Board Members for our Board of Directors.

We are a working board. Meaning that board members both attend one meeting a month, as well as act as the organizers for any events we put on. Some of the events we put on include “Thursday night at the movies”, the Creative Jam, the Annual Kaien Island Craft Fair in November, Arts and Culture Week events etc.

The Prince Rupert Community Arts Council is reliant almost exclusively on the hard work and dedication of Volunteers and we are always looking for people who want to help us. The success of any event depends largely on the support of volunteers. We are looking for enthusiastic and outgoing volunteers to join our dynamic team.

Share your passion for the arts, learn new things, have fun and make a difference within your community, volunteer a little or volunteer a lot, for one project or many. Have an idea for a fun and unique Arts event for Prince Rupert and want help getting it off the ground?

For Arts and Culture week the Prince Rupert Community Arts Council  is hosting a showing of Postcards on the Theme of “Hello Neighbour!” at the Ice House Gallery (in the Atlin Terminal Building).

These Postcards represent the submitted works of  Artists, crafters, and creative people from Prince Rupert and the outlying communities and will be on display for the entire month of April.

Why Postcards? With the rise of PostSecret and other forms of mobile art, postcards have gone from being a tourist novelty to a mini canvas. This is an exhibition of opportunity about community involvement, expanding your mind and about different representations of art with a different medium

Every year at the end of April, schools and communities across the province host a spectacular array of events and activities as part of Arts and Culture Week. Now entering its 15th year, BC Arts and Culture Week turns the spotlight on the vital contribution that arts and culture make in learning and in life.

As part of this year’s Arts & Culture Week, the Prince Rupert Community Arts Council is organizing two events under the common theme “Hello Neighbour!”

Postcard Art Show: Last year’s Postcard Art Show was very well received, and we expect this one will be another success. Artists, crafters, and creative people from Prince Rupert and the outlying communities are invited to submit their work for this non-juried, everybody- welcome event. The postcards will be displayed at the Ice House Gallery for the entire month of April, with a Meet the Artists reception on April 27th at the Ice House. There will be a Viewers’ Choice award – a gift certificate to the local art supply store.

Photo Story Contest: Photography enthusiasts are invited to tell a story in three photographs. All submissions will be gathered in a digital anthology that will be first presented during the artists’ reception. There will be cash prizes awarded to the three best entries.

Registration is on a first come – first serve basis -  No one will be considered registered until payment is received in full. Email, mail slot, and P.O Box will be checked Daily!  If a workshop if full you will be notified and you can either be put on a waitlist or you can choose to switch to an available workshop.

Registration fee:  $50 adult / $45 student & seniors (circle one)  (Minimum age is 15)

Participants are asked to please bring: an open and inspired mind.

Creative Writing registrants: writing utensils and notebook

Photography registrants:  digital camera and manual (can even be a camera phone) (tripod is optional)

Fiber Arts registrants: sewing machine (You must know how to operate your machine, and it must be in good working order) iron, scissors, fabric, needles, thread etc. – a complete supply list will be emailed to all registrants.

Visual Arts registrants: Pencil/eraser/Ballpoint pen/three small containers (like laundry scoops or sm. Yogurt containers) / a board to tape paper to – We will be doing 11×15” paintings so whatever you have for the paper to fit on works. Just nothing too heavy. Also feel free to bring your favorite watercolour supplies (supplies will be provided – however you may appreciate your own  brushes, masking fluid, paint colours, etc. )



ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BE PRE-REGISTERED—DEADLINE: Friday, February 15^th .

Thursday Night at the Movies starts off it’s Winter season on January 10th, 2013 with “midnight’s children“.  This is an epic film from Oscar-nominated director Deepa Mehta, based on the Booker Prize winning novel by Salman Rushdie.

In February (on the 7th) you won’t want to miss the one time showing in Prince Rupert of  Anna Karenina.  The third collaboration of Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley with acclaimed director Joe Wright, is a bold, theatrical new vision of the epic story of love, adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s timeless novel.  The story powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart.

Then Join us in March for Quartet: Set in iconic New York City, this is the story of four musicians, bound together by their passion for music and long years of working together. But when their patriarch Peter is diagnosed with a terminal illness, the repercussions hit the group deeper than they could imagine.

All films, are shown at 7pm, at the Prince Rupert Cinema – Tickets are $8 cash at the door.

The CREATIVE JAM is a weekend of interdisciplinary creative workshops with participants jamming on a common theme. From the realms of photography, fabric, visual art and creative writing, four facilitators will guide individuals and groups through a process of learning through active creativity.  There are five 2.5 hour workshop time slots over three days. These will be “hands on” creative opportunity for the participants.  There are also mixers, where participants and facilitators get to interact and you’ll also get a chance to try out another artistic medium!

The weekend will open with a meet and greet on Friday evening around 6 o’clock, and end on Sunday with a public presentation of the works and efforts of the participants.

From the Realm of Photography we are inviting  Curtis Cunningham to come join us.  He is  a  freelance photography and graphic designer from Smithers who can be found at  www.photistry.com.

Creative Writing will be facilitated by Sheila Peters,  another wonderful Smithers based artist.  She has just recently published her first novel, but is perhaps better known for her work with Creekstone press and it’s recent publication The Enpipe Line: 70,000 km of poetry written in resistance to the Northern Gateway pipeline proposal.  She can be found on line at: http://sheilapeters.com/

In the Visual Arts portion of the weekend, we are bringing up Leslie Redhead.  An award winning  watercolourist known for her unique poured watercolours, wherein she uses liquid watercolor and literally pours the paint onto the paper. Leslie can be Found at http://leslieredheadart.blogspot.ca/

We have also been lucky to receive a generous donation from Opus Framing and Art Supplies for the visual Arts portion of the workshop.  For more about Opus see : http://opusartsupplies.com/

I will be putting a little brochure together soon with application information, and a bit about our facilitators.  Last year Photography was a sold out show as was the Fine Arts portion of the workshop.   You will need to register early to ensure your spot!  Stay tuned for I will be posting the applications shortly after Christmas.

The bustle of a craft fair before opening is exhilarating… people busy setting up, carting goods to and fro, arguments breaking out about who is encroaching on whom and who is blocking the flow of traffic, socializing among crafters and a steady stream of wet and muddied footprints in and out the door.

By 5pm I was exhausted, and glad that I don’t work in the retail business. Never the less I had a great day and I’m glad I was there to take it all in.   Special thanks to Annie for the Herculean effort of organizing and to all  to all who came out to support our vendors.  This could not be possible with out you.

NORTH COAST ARTISTS’ COOPERATIVE

Calling all Visual Artists painters, sculptors, photographers, carvers, textile artists, printmakers, potters and jewelers for the 2nd annual Winterfest Art Fair to be held at the Museum of Northern BC, Ceremonial Room on Saturday, December 1 from 10:00 AM to 9 PM. It is a big event in this town and we at the Arts Council are pretty excited about it!

In case you don’t know…  The Craft Fair is going to be held on Saturday, November 17th 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre gymnasium.

We have filled up every last available table!  The rumour is “Lots of new faces this year!! “
